DFS Late News: What to Do When a Player Is Ruled Out

By Splash Play Staff ยท A guide to reading the tools

When late news breaks in DFS, do four things in order: confirm the report, find which of your lineups it touches, re-check the projections that depend on it, and change only what the contest's lock still allows. The order matters. Most late-news mistakes come from rebuilding first and confirming afterward.

1. Confirm it

Go to the team or league source, not a screenshot of one. Check you have the right player: two players with the same last name on one slate is enough to wreck a lineup.

Keep three times apart. The news came at 6:20. Your research was last checked at 6:10. You saw the news at 6:23. Seeing it at 6:23 tells you nothing about whether the projections on your screen have caught up.

2. Find what it touches

List what you built from the old information: the lineups that include the player, the lineups that include his teammates, any file you exported and any simulation you ran. A scratch reaches further than the one name. Other players' opportunities may change. Check whether their projections already account for the news before treating them as outdated.

Keep your original lineups and files. If the report turns out to be wrong, or about a different slate, you want to be able to go back.

3. Re-check the projections

Look at whether the tool has the change. If the board has not caught up with a scratch, MLB Late Swap has a "Know someone is out?" control to mark the player yourself. Its "Check for updates" refreshes the posted batting orders. It does not update projections, so don't read it as confirmation that the numbers moved.

A simulation from before the news used the old projections. Run it again before you lean on its results.

4. Know what lock allows

A player whose game has started is locked, and whether you can change the rest of a lineup depends on the contest's rules. Those belong to DraftKings or FanDuel. Read them for the contest you are in.

In MLB Late Swap, players whose games have locked stay in place, and a locked inactive player cannot be replaced. If a replacement does not fit the salary or the position, the window tells you. You then choose how much to change: fix only the inactive players, or also look for upgrades among players who have not locked.

5. Make the change and confirm it where it counts

Export the Late Swap CSV, upload it on DraftKings under My Lineups, Edit Entries, Upload CSV, and read DraftKings' result. Splash Play does not submit anything to DraftKings for you.

Four different things can be true, and only the last one matters:

Stopping at the third is an easy mistake to make under time pressure. The file is in your Downloads folder and the old lineup is still in the contest.

Where to see it

The Late Swap section of the field guide shows each screen. Features depend on your membership: compare memberships. Late news changes the inputs. It does not change the fact that projections are forecasts.
